Isuzu Trooper A/C Squeal
Q. Dear Vince, I own a 1996 Isuzu Trooper, 3.2 liter V-6, 124,000 miles on it. Whenever I turn on A/C (during last summer), it makes a high screeching noise for few seconds and the noise repeats every 10 to 15 minutes for few seconds. A/C system works fine. The noise really bothers.
I noticed that the clutch is detached and does not turn whenever the noise happens, then it turns when the noise stops. Should I replace the whole A/C condenser or just a part of it? The weather in Georgia is getting warmer. Your advise will be really appreciated.
Sincerely,
StephenA. There are three possibilities here, it's either a loose A/C belt, an A/C compressor clutch going bad or the A/C compressor itself is going bad.
If the belt is loose and/or worn out, replace it and make sure it is tightened properly. To check for proper tension push the belt in between the crank pulley and the A/C compressor. With moderate pressure it will deflect inward less than a ½:.
If it's looser than that, loosen the lock nut and turn the adjuster clockwise to tighten the belt. Be sure you re-tighten the lock not when you complete the adjustment.
