Ford Thunderbird Slips Under Load

Q. Sir, Here is the problem of my car; When I try to go more speed or my car climb over a high slope my car rpms increase 3 to 4 and my gear is also not changing and at this time my car is making lot of noise. It looks like the pull back noise, but if I reduce the speed or I didn't push gas for 2 to 5 seconds then I push the gas it is going to the top gear.

Ford Thunderbird Slips Under Load

Sir, can you explain me what is the problem and what are steps I need to take for solving the problem? Expecting your favorable reply.

  • 1994 Ford Thunderbird LX
  • 3.8 liter V-6
  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control
  • Rack and pinion steering

Thanks and Warm Regards,
Muthu

A. If I'm understanding you correctly, when you are cruising and then go to accelerate, the rpms go up and the vehicle doesn't move. But if you let it slow down, wait a few seconds and then accelerate it downshifts and accelerates just fine.

If that is the case, there is a TSb on this problem.

Technical Bulletin No.: ATRATB305
Date: 101/1995
Transmission: AODE, 4R70W
Subject: Shifts To Neutral At Heavy Throttle
Application:
Ford, Mercury, Lincoln with AODE, 4R70W transmissions

Shifts to Neutral at Heavy Throttle:
A shift to neutral at heavy throttle or kickdown can be caused by restricted or flooded shift solenoids. Use the following steps to correct this condition.

I would let your Ford Dealer or a good transmission shop look at this since it involves checking and, possibly, modifying the valves in the transmission valve body.

The noise concerns me however. It could very well be an indication of internal transmission damage.
