Mercury Sable Belt Squeal

Q. Vincent, I have a 1997 Mercury Sable. If there is any water on the road at all when I drive over it, it doesn't have to be but a puddle, my car's belt squeals and I assume slips. The lights dim and the battery light comes on. So far it's been checked for a loose belt, worn belt, and some kind of shield. Everything seems to be all right.

Mercury Sable Belt Squeal

I'm getting a little concerned about being in traffic when this happens as the power steering also is effected.

Thanks,
Sue

A. Got it covered for you Sue. Here it is direct from Ford.

ISSUE:
The Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD) belt may slip on some vehicles during wet weather conditions and/or when driving through puddles and/or the crankshaft pulley may be damaged. This may result in increased steering efforts and/or charging system lamp illumination.

ACTION:
Replace the FEAD belt and inspect the crankshaft pulley for damage. The new belt should reduce the possibility of belt slippage. Refer to the appropriate Taurus/Sable Service Manual for replacement details.
