Pontiac Grand Am Cold Idle Surge

Q. Hello Vincent, I have a 1988 Pontiac Grand Am, 135,000 miles, 2.5 liter engine, manual transmission, A/C not fuel injected. When the engine is cold, usually after sitting over night, when you start it and keep steady pressure on the gas pedal, lets say at 1,500 rpm, the engine rpm will increase and decrease, very quickly, like I was pumping the gas pedal.

This will continue for about two or three minutes until the engine is warm. Then the car runs great, any suggestions?

Thanks,
Rob

A. I would try to have it scanned to see if there is any sensors out of range. Sounds like an EGR problem or maybe a fuel issue or coolant temperature sensor problem. A good tech with a scanner should be able to pick something out as the problem. Also, a fuel pressure test may show something.
