GMC Yukon Ignition Control Module

Q. Hi Vince, I have a 1992 GMC Yukon 5.0 liter with 125,000 miles. Recently the coil failed and was replaced. Everything seems to be fine once again. I am concerned about the ignition control module. What is the life expectancy of this component? The coil failed in my driveway, but I had just returned from a wood cutting trip.

GMC Yukon Ignition Control Module

Had it failed a few hours before, it would have made for a real pain, tow truck (if they could find me), hooked to a trailer full of firewood, lots of mud and overall, very expensive. Should the ignition control module be replaced to be safe?

What other components in the ignition system can cause a complete engine failure. I realize there are lots of things to go wrong, but just focus on the ignition system with 125,000 miles.

Thanks,
John

A. If it were my truck, I would go down to my local GM dealer and order a complete distributor assembly. It will come with a new cap and rotor as well. These years have been known to loose ground in the distributor base plate causing all kinds of nightmares. The distributor shaft magnets also loose their strength as well as pick-up coil windings. This should get you going for a lot of "peace of mind"!
