Buick Regal LS DTC P0442

Q. A question about a 2000 Buick Regal LS turbo with 48,000 miles. Check Engine Light on and emission code of P0442 found on inspection. Failed NC inspection renewal. Is there any service info on this error and warranty coverage by GM?

Thanks...

Buick Regal LS DTC P0442

A. If I remember correctly, this code means there is a small leak detected in the evaporative emission system. There is a chart in the service manual to diagnose this. It's probably out of warranty unless you have an extended one. There may be a loose fuel cap all the way up to a hole in a fuel line or tank.

Also, two solenoids are in the system that the PCM controls to allow the engine to draw a vacuum on the tank and measures the time it takes for vacuum to leak down. I would take it to a dealer to make sure it's fixed right and gets you through the emission test.
