Saturn SC2 EGR Valve Questions
Q. Hello, My name is Jason, I have a 1994 Saturn SC2. I just replaced the starter a couple days ago, but before that, my service engine soon light came on. I ran the codes and came up with a faulty EGR valve. I know where it is located, I was just curious to know about how much they run? And more importantly what exactly does it do?
Am I hurting myself if I continue to run the car without replacing it? And how much will I affect the gas milage? I was told that's what the EGR valve deals with gas and emissions. If you can point me out in a direction in which to go, that would be most helpful.
I replace everything that is majorly going to hurt my car, I just am not sure if the EGR valve is hurting my gas milage, when I first bought the car, the gas milage was a lot better. Three years ago, I bought it used. My service engine soon light would come on for like maybe 10 seconds, but now it comes on and stays on for like 10 minutes, and like I said I ran the codes and the EGR is the problem, just not sure the cost, and how important it is.
Thank you,
JasonA. It is an emission control device and may affect fuel mileage depending on the trouble with it. The code "points" to EGR, but that doesn't mean it's the valve. There may be a solenoid and vacuum hoses in the system that may be the trouble. You need the diagnostic chart for this code to make sure all is checked before replacing any parts.
