Ford Explorer Chirping Noise
Q. Vincent, I have a 1994 Ford Explorer with approximately 100,000 miles. It is a 4.0 litre V-6, 4x4 automatic transmission. The problem I have is when the vehicle is cold there is a squeal similar to fan belt squeal but that is not it. It is almost like a chirping noise (It is hard to describe).
I have taken the belt off and ran the vehicle and same problem. The squeal is more prevalent when the vehicle is under power. The problem used to be happening more often than not but now it is all the time. Recently it has been happening sporadically when the engine is warm. I have taken it to Ford and they cannot figure it out. Help!
A. If the noise is still there with the belt removed, and it sounds like it's coming from the front of the engine, the only thing in that area that could make any kind of noise is the timing chain or timing chain tensioner. Best way to pinpoint it is with a mechanics stethoscope.
