Nissan Pathfinder Gurgling Noise

Q. Dear Vincent, I have a 1996 Nissan Pathfinder 4WD that I drive mainly in the city on short trips. I recently went on a five hour trip and the Check Engine Light came on as well as the O/D Light would flash for a short time, 5 seconds, after starting the car. The car runs fine, engine wise, but I hear a strange sound upon acceleration.

Nissan Pathfinder Gurgling Noise

It sounds like a pump that is pumping fluid with some air in the line and only occurs when the transmission is engaged. The sound occurs most of time upon acceleration, but not every time, and it is a faint sound. When the car is in park and I rev the engine, I do not hear the sound. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Oscar

A. I hope you checked all the fluid levels. I can't tell for sure, but it sounds like your engine coolant is low. When it gets too low it will make a noticeable noise going through the heater core.

Needless to say, you need to pull codes from the PCM and TCM and see what is stored. It may be related to the noise or it may not, I can't be sure. You will need a scan tool to get the codes.

That's about all I can offer you at this point. I would have to drive it and listen to it to give you any kind of educated guess.
