Jeep Cherokee Starts And Stalls
Q. I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Limited 139,000 miles, 4.0 liter fuel injection, A/C and automatic transmission. The problem started a while back as after starting it and running it for a while and shutting it down it would not start again. It would try to run and stall within seconds of starting it. Now it won't start at all, even cold. It tries to run and again stalls within seconds.
I have replaced fuel filter, rotor, spark plugs, ignition switch, ignition control module and it still does the same thing. Could you please give me some ideas?
Thanks,
RickA. First thing you need to determine is if you are missing fuel or spark. Take a vacuum line off the intake manifold and spray a good healthy shot of carburetor cleaner inside the intake manifold. Put the vacuum line back on and try to start the engine. If it starts and runs until the carburetor cleaner is gone, you have a fuel problem. If it doesn't, you have an ignition problem.
If it does start, you will need to do a fuel pressure test since the most likely problem would be a bad fuel pump.
Next thing would be to check for codes and see what they have to say. I think it is the ASD Relay, but you need to check it to be sure.
