Sable Blower Motor

Q. Hello Mr. Ciulla, The fan motor went out and I have been trying to find the fan relay. The Haynes Manual says it is on the left strut tower, but I have not been able to locate it. The Haynes Manual also, says that the IRCM/CCRM control the fan motor. Does my car have a fan relay and if so where is it or do I have to replace the IRCM/CCRM.

1992 Mercury Topaz GS
2.3 liter
5 Speed Manual
86,776 Miles
Fuel Injection
No ABS Brakes
P/S and A/C - No Cruise Control
Rack and Pinion Steering

A. That system does not have a blower motor relay nor is the blower motor controlled by the Integrated Relay Control Module (IRCM) or Constant Control Relay Module (CCRM). What Haynes is telling you is the ICRM is located on the LH shock tower.

Basically power for the blower motor comes from fuse 9 to the blower motor resistor. It goes through a thermal limiter to the blower motor. Power then travels back to the resistor and to the blower speed switch and then to ground.

Now that we know the circuit, we can test it and try to narrow down the possibilities. The first thing to do is unplug the blower motor and see if there is power to the orange wire with the key on. If there is, the problem is in the blower switch, resistor or wiring.

If there is no power, then the problem is with the resistor, fuse or wiring.

The next thing to check is the resistor itself. With the connector plugged in and the key on, there should be power at the pink/white wire and the orange wire. If there isn't, replace the resistor. If there is then the blower switch is bad and needs to be replaced.

Basically it is either the resistor or the switch. It is not unusual for either one to go bad on this car.
