Chevy Mini Van Has Stinky Brakes

Q. Vincent, I have a:

  • 2001 Chevy Mini Van
  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,000 miles
  • Fuel Injected
Chevy Mini Van Has Stinky Brakes

When I brake hard, an extremely bad smell permeates the air. It is not rotten eggs, it has more of a chemical fume smell. The brakes aren't squealing and the pedal isn't spongy or hard to press. Any idea what this is?

Thanks,
Susan

A. There may be a foreign substance on the pads, shoes or brake surfaces of drums or rotors. Do you notice any leaks under car? Maybe it has nothing to do with braking at all. All I can tell you is to drive it hard and have someone with a keen nose to stand by where you are going to stop and have them give a whiff to see what it is. Also look for smoke or steam.
