Chevy Cavalier A/C Compressor Noise
Q. I have a 1994 Chevy Cavalier, 3.1 liter V-6 100,000 miles and it is running good. Every so often the A/C compressor make noise. I think it is the A/C compressor clutch. When I turn on the A/C when the noise happens it goes away. It does not happen all the time. Can I replace the clutch myself? What tools would I need? For now can I just remove the plug to the A/C clutch to stop the noise?
Thanks!!!!
EdA.
If the noise goes away when you turn A/C on, unplugging it will not help you. Then it will never go away. You need to isolate the noise to the A/C compressor or any other accessory that is run off the serpentine belt. How's the tensioner look for the belt? There is a bearing on front of the compressor that supports the clutch. This bearing is loaded all the time because of the belt turning the pulley. Sometimes this bearing can make a noise and it will change or go away if the A/C turned is on.
I would not recommend this as a do it yourself job, there are just too many special tools needed to change this bearing with any success. Also the age of the compressor may not justify this job. It may be easier to replace the compressor IF you isolate the noise to this bearing.
