Questions and Answers

Mitsubishi ATF

Q. Hello, Mr. Ciulla, My name is Aki. My friend has Mitsubishi Eclipse 1995 RS Automatic, 40,000 miles, 2.0 liter front wheel drive. As people know that this engine is Chrysler not Mitsubishi. So automatic transmission is also made by Chrysler. It is same as Neon, Voyager.

But Mitsubishi recommend Diamond ATF for this car. I do not know about Talon. Talon is specified to use Diamond ATF too? Diamond ATF is incompatible with ATF+3. ATF must be use specified kind. So I do not why Mitsubishi recommends Diamond ATF?

Thank you for your help,
Aki

A. Okay, the 1995 Mitsubishi Eclipse requires DIAMOND ATF SP, or equivalent. The 1995 Eagle Talon requires Mopar (R) ATF Plus 3 Type 7176, or Equivalent. The 1995 dodge Neon calls for Mopar ATF Plus or Dexron II.

The Mitsubishi used four different transaxles. The F4A21, F4A22, F4A33 and W4A33 transaxle. The Eagle Talon uses the 41TE transaxle and the Dodge Neon uses the 31TH transaxle. All are four speed, fully automatic transaxles. They are all different transmissions thus the different fluid requirements.

The fluids each one uses are not compatible with each other and should not be mixed. At the least doing so would alter the quality of the shift and at worst cause internal transmission damage. If you are in doubt about which fluid to use, purchase the fluid from the dealer and you will know you are getting the correct type fluid.
