A Loud, Puffing, Infiniti I30

Q. Hi, The question I have is that my car engine is too loud. When cruising I feel like I am driving a truck. When I turn the engine off, it’s like putting off a candle only a short puff I hear, it does not turn off like a healthy engine. I am sorry but I don’t know how better to describe it. I just had the 60,000 miles service performed. I had the dealer perform fuel induction service.

Fuel economy is good, about 23 MPG. This problem existed before I took the car in for service and still continues.

My car information is as follows:

2000 Infiniti I30
3.0 liter V-6 engine
Automatic transmission
65,000 miles
Fuel Injection
P/S, P/B, A/C, Cruise Control
Rack and Pinion Steering

If you have an answer for me I would appreciate it.

Thank you...

A. Without being able to hear the noise, it would be difficult for me to be accurate. However what you describe sounds like, no pun intended, like a small exhaust leak. Nissan engines are prone to losing exhaust manifold studs creating an exhaust leak.

Also, under the vehicle is a flexible pipe that absorbs engine movement. It is not uncommon for this flex pipe to crack, causing a vacuum leak.

That "short puff" may be the electronically controlled engine mounts. If that is the case, your Dealer has a fix for that.
