Bronco Transmission Leak

Q. Hi. I stumbled upon your page while looking for information; I've got a MAJOR leak from my transmission in my 1993 Bronco; I know nothing about 4x4's. I have little understanding of transmissions, either. I just recently bought the truck, so I don't know much about it yet. It is a 302 with EFI (about 80,000 miles).

It has an automatic transmission with automatic locking hubs. Push button 4x4 and LOW RANGE. There is a rubber gasket-like piece dead center of the transmission at the bottom towards the front. I think it's actually ON the bell-housing. It doesn't seem very tightly attached, and it leaks terribly. I haven't engaged the 4x4 on it but maybe once or twice. Both times I made sure to back up to disengage the hubs like the manual tells you to. If you could shed some insight I would greatly appreciate it, and speed would be a virtue.

Thanks,
Dave

A. First off Dave, I get a lot of e-mails from people looking for help. I don't turn anybody away but in order to be fair, I answer them on a first come, first served basis. This usually means I run three to five days behind. For people who need an answer now, I recommend that they call me for help.

Now I'm not sure, but I think what you are describing is an inspection cover. If the leak is coming from there then it's likely you have a leaking front pump or torque converter.
