Civic Codes And Milage Drop

Q. Hi! I would like to seek your assistance. I have a 1990 Honda Accord LX. (144,000) Weeks/a month ago the check engine light came on and noticed an increase on my gas usage. I did a self diagnosis test by using a jumper made of paper clip as advised by other mechanics, and was able to check the code relayed by the check engine light from the ECU which told me that there was a problem with my O2 sensor.

And after a week of trying to get a good deal finally was able to get a good one and installed it. And was so happy that I was again able to maximize my gas usage and the check engine light is gone. Unfortunately this week made a frustrating observation that my gas mileage went down again and I could feel that it seem the car lost some of its power. I am tight on my budget. What is the next thing to do? I sit the catalytic converter? Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

A. I wish I knew which code you got. From what you describe it appears that it was a DTC 1 which indicates A problem in the Oxygen (02) Sensor Circuit. Notice it says O2 sensor circuit? The problem can be anywhere in wiring, connections or the sensor itself. That's why you need to check the whole system before you go and replace parts.

The next thing to do is to remove the BACK UP fuse in the under hood relay box for at least ten seconds to reset the ECU. Then take it for a ride until the MIL comes back on and then pull the codes. Let's see if it's the same as before.
