Volvo Power Steering

Q. Dear Mr Vincent, I hope you can help me. I wonder if my Volvo 360GLE can be replace with power assisted steering. What system is it suitable for this vehicle? Do you have the manufacturer's name and web site?

Thanks,
Bobby

A. I never heard of the Volvo 360GLE and when I checked my books for a Volvo 360 GLE from 1982 to 2003 and I do not find one listed. I wanted to give you some more detailed advice on the possibility of doing this conversion, having never seen one, it is difficult.

In general I would have to say if it can be done, you would have to, at the very least, replace the power steering rack or steering box with a power version. You would need to get a power steering pump and mounting brackets and bolts. You may have to replace the front crankshaft pulley to accommodate the power steering belt also.

In addition you would need the high and low pressure lines to and from the pump to the steering rack.

A power steering pump, power steering rack, lines and hardware will probably run about $1,000.00 to $1,500.00. I don't know of anyone who makes a power steering conversion kit for any car. Only you can decide if the car is worth that kind of money.
