280-ZX Fuel Injectors
Q. Hello, My Neighbor owns a 1981 Nissan 280-ZX and says that the fuel injectors leak fuel. He thought Possibly there might be a gasket or seal leaking which could be replaced. He called our local Nissan dealership about the problem, and they quoted him $800.00 for repair.
I was talking to other people about this and someone thought that there was an update to those injectors, that you could no longer get the old style and therefore had to replace them with the new style. Could you shed any light on this?
Thank you,
JimA. The short fuel lines that go from the fuel rail to the injectors are what usually leaks on those engines. I believe you can get a fuel line kit from Nissan to replace them. If not, you can get a length of high pressure fuel line from Nissan and just cut to the length of the original lines.
If you just need to replace the lines, it should be noted that there is only one hose clamp on the lines. it is on the fuel rail side of the line. The other side is pressed fit and the injector has a special fitting that holds the hose on. That is why I say to get the fuel line from Nissan, you'll be sure to get the correct line for replacement.
When you cut the old line off, be very careful you do not score the injector fitting, this could cause a fuel leak. The way I take them off is with a very sharp razor blade and carefully cut the hose along its length, but not completely through. I then use a pair of pliers to grip the hose and pull it off.
If you need to replace the injectors, I would highly recommend replacing the fuel lines with the new injectors. You also need to replace the "O" rings that go into the hole in the intake. Reusing the old ones will cause a vacuum leak. In either case it is recommended you use new fuel line hose clamps. Don't use the worm style mini clamps. You can get them at Nissan along with the fuel line.
As for the injectors themselves, there are a few different types. They are identified by the color of the metal ring below the fitting, connector color or a paint dot on the connector. On the 1981 280-ZX there were five different injectors used. I would recommend taking them with you when you get new ones. This way the parts man will know which type you need and match them up.
