Beretta Eats Dimmer Switchs

Q. My 1990 Chevy Beretta is a GT 3.1 liter with cruise, A/C, power windows and door locks. It has approx 170,000 miles. About two years ago the headlights (both high and low beams) quit working. I replaced the Dimmer Switch and all was well. They continued working for about nine months and then quit again.

Beretta Eats Dimmer Switchs

Once again, I replaced the dimmer switch since this was an easy and inexpensive repair. This time they only worked for about three months. I replaced the dimmer switch again and they only worked for one day. I was driving at night and the lights would go to high beam and then flicker off and then come back on all on their own.

Now they do not work at all. What should I do? I am afraid to take it to a mechanic for fear that I will be over charged for something that may be simple to fix. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Scott

A. Usually when a component like this burns out consistently, it is due to a high current draw. You are going to need an ammeter to determine what is drawing the current. If you have fog lights, remove the fog light relay to eliminate the fog lights as the problem.

The wiring for the head lights in your car is fairly simple. I would try replacing all the head light bulbs before I go tearing into the wiring.
