Escort Third Brake Light

Q. I have a 1990 Ford Escort and the third brake light will not light up. I have checked the bulb and the fuse, what else could it be?

A. There is a splice in the main harness, near the take out to the low coolant lamp. At that splice is a red/light green wire that goes to the third brake light socket. The light green wire goes to the other brake lights. If you are not getting power to the third brake light, then the splice or the wire from the splice to the third brake light socket is bad.

If you are getting power to the third brake light socket, then it's a bad ground. To check that, run a jumper from the black wire to ground and that should light the light.

If neither of these checks provides an answer, unplug the connector and put a test light between the two wires. If the test light lights, you have a bad third light socket.
