Volkswagen Jetta Headlights

Q. I have a 1998 Volkswagen TDI Jetta. 4-cylinder, manual transmission. 60,000 miles. Cruise control. Do you know of any history with problems of frequently burned out headlight bulbs? I purchased this car brand new in 1998 and have had to replace the drivers side bulb three times and the passenger side bulb twice.

This just seems excessive. Or is this normal and I should just deal with it?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

A. I haven't noticed any problems with the headlights on the Jetta that would cause the headlight bulbs to burn out prematurely. It could very well be the brand of bulb you are using that could be the problem. Especially if you're using Sylvania head light bulbs. My experience has been that they do no last very long at all.

Also if you touch the glass portion of the bulb with your fingers that will cause the bulbs to burn out prematurely. The oils from your skin get on the bulb and cause a hot spot that will burn the bulbs out quickly. SO when you install them do not touch the glass portion of the bulb.
