Disc And Drum Brakes

Q. How long should break pads last? This would be a general rule type question. I replaced the pads on my 1993 Lumina 3.1 sedan two years ago on the front and the rears just over one year ago and the all seem to be needing it again. I also have a 1993 Ford Escort wagon that needs replaced as well and the rear are drums, which I have never done.

Are drums hard to do? My wife and I disagree with how often we should replace pads and shoes. She feels they should last at least five years or more. I keep trying to tell her it is based on how many mile and how much wear they occur. Can you help? I really appreciate your assistance in advance in advance.

A. The quality of the pads, driving habits, maintenance of the car all have an affect on how long the brakes will last. Rear drums are not difficult to do. If the Lumina has rear disc pads and they are wearing fast, you may have seized caliper slides. These were a problem in this year.
