1988 Chevy S-10: Should I?

Q. Vincent, I have a 1988 Chevy S-10 RWD pickup with 5-speed manual transmission, fuel injected 2.5 liter straight 4 engine and manual everything else with about 120,000 miles on it.

Awhile back I stopped driving the truck when my Mom surprised me with a brand new 1992 Ford Probe. Whoopie! (sarcasm) Anyway, the reason I got that car was because I was having some trouble. When starting off from a stopped position the gear shifter would pop out of first gear slamming into neutral and making an awfully lot bad sounding noise.

I was wondering if the entire transmission should be replaced or if it was a part that could merely be replaced. If I do need to get a new (used or rebuilt) transmission could you possibly tell me roughly how much it should be and what model or part number I should be looking for?

Another thing I was worried about was oil leaking around the engine header. I figured I could just put in a new seal but speculate that there is more wrong with the engine than that due to an excessive amount of oil being blow into the air filter at the air intake.

I have considered overhauling the engine myself with the help of someone more experienced but was wondering how much it would cost assuming that most of the engine parts where in good working order. Is there any possibility of overhauling this engine for under $500.00 if I already have all the tools?

I don't know how $$$ I'm willing to put into this truck yet but I love it and it's got a great frame. I know the original owner and he had it undercoated the week he got it. There is some rust on it but would like to salvage the truck. I need expert advise! Please give me some hope!

A. I would try to get a used transmission from a junkyard, $200.00 to $300.00. The oil is probably from the valve cover gasket, simple to change. As for oil in the air cleaner, I would check the PCV system. Possibly a clogged PCV valve or hose to valve cover. Check for vacuum at PCV valve. That's about all I would spend on this thing.
