No Brake Lights

Q. Ok, I'm having a problem with my brake lights. Mainly, they're not coming on when I brake. I'm not really sure where to look to find the problem. I've checked all the bulbs that are part of the brake lights and they all looked to be in good working order. I'm in a position where I can't just drop it off at a shop, unless it's an inexpensive fix. Any help you can offer on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Tony

A. You didn't mention what kind of car you have, so in general terms here's what to look for.

Under the dash, connected to the brake pedal is a switch. This switch sends power back to the brake lights when you step on the brake. This switch is, most likely, bad. What you can do is unplug the two wire connector and with a test light see if it's getting power. If it is, the switch is bad. To confirm this, plug the connector back in, step on the brake pedal and you should have power on both wires. If not, it's definitely the switch. If you do, then there is a problem in the wiring from the switch to the lights.

But I'm willing to bet real money it is the switch.
