When To Take A Shift

Q. Vince, I just purchased a used a car with a standard. What can you tell me about the rule of thumb for when to shift the gears. Is it according to the rpm's?

Bill

A. Ask ten standard transmission drivers this question and you will get ten different answers. My rule of thumb is to shift between 2,000 and 2,500 rpm. Of course this is in general, there are times when you will need to let it wind up higher than this. Like getting on a freeway or interstate for example.
