Accelerator Pump Repair

Q. Hi, I have an old four barrel Holley Economaster 450 cfm carburetor. The person that rebuilt my carburetor broke the rubber cup off of the bottom of the accelerator pump stem (The spring retaining washer is still in place holding the spring in place). This person didn't have a new stem, so he just put the new cup in the bottom of the barrel and said that it would work just as well that way.

Right or wrong? Why would it be okay?

TIA,
Allen

A. There's an old saying in my business; "If a stupid idea works, it ain't stupid." The rubber cup on the accelerator pump is the only part that goes bad. So even if he just replaces the cup, and it works, then I would consider it a good repair.

Many times a mechanic has to improvise. There are many things that work the book doesn't even mention, and many times they work better than the way the book says to do it. I used to repair certain Nissans with the spring from a ball point pen. I think your mechanic improvised with replacing just the cup and since it works, I would say he did a good job.
