Grinding CJ
Q. I have a 1976 Jeep CJ, 258, 3-speed manual transmission. I was driving the other day and while in first or third gear there is a grinding-chattering type of noise. The noise is not constant but every 5-10 seconds. The noise does not appear at all in second gear.
When I push in the clutch it goes away. The noise is also present if the Jeep is in neutral, again disappearing when I push in the clutch. I am assuming something is wrong with the clutch, but I do not have very much experience working on them. The noise is still present if the transfer case is also put into neutral. Any ideas?
Thanks,
MatthewA. Your probably not going to want to hear this Matthew, but the noise is probably coming from the input shaft bearings. The fact the noise goes away when you step on the clutch would tend to confirm this.
