Dodge Caravan Jerky Steering
Q. I have a Dodge Caravan that has developed a strange steering wheel problem. As I'm driving along straight and moving the steering slightly to the left and right, to keep the vehicle straight, there is a slight jerk or tightness in the wheel. This does not happen all the time, most of the time the steering wheel is very smooth.
The jerk in the steering wheel does not jerk the entire vehicle. The wheel itself just feels like suddenly it's stuck then it will go back to being smooth again. I'm mainly worried if it could eventually jerk and stay stuck and I will lose control of the vehicle. Does that sound possible? What could be the problem? Please help!! All information is greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
A. With something as vital to the safety of you, your passengers and others on the road, the best thing to do is assume that this WILL result in the lose of vehicle control.
The problem is most likely in the power rack and pinion steering rack assembly. Any good shop will be able to determine this for you.
If the vehicle is a 1992, there was a recall on the Steering Column Coupling Bolt. This bolt had a possibility of breaking and the recall was to replace this bolt. If the coupling bolt shown in the picture is a shiny silver bolt, then it could be cracked and causing the bind. If the bolt is black, then the bolt is okay.
