How To Test Your Shocks

Q. Hi, I have just installed new Rancho RS9000 shocks for my 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ). Everything is fine with the shocks and I drove comfortably with them for days. Then I wanted to test the shocks over a regular street bump with a speed of about 10-15 mph (stupid of me).

And after the third time going over the bump I felt a loud thump in the rear right of the car and ever since when I drive over a small regular street bump or any other irregularity on the road, I feel a rather loud thump. I believe something went loose that third time over the bump but I don't know what.

I know that a mechanic can take hours to diagnose the problem which may cost me hundreds of dollars. So the problem is not with the shocks it's that something is loose. I checked the shock and wheel and they are all right. Do you have any input for me please???

Thanks a lot,
Marouan

A. You're going to have to pull the wheel off and look around. Something broke or came loose. But you don't need me to tell you that. It's possible you blew out a shock also. You might want to take it off and exchange it for a new one. If I could tell you what broke from here, I would tell you and send you a bill.
