Saturn SL-2 Kicking And Hesitating

Q. Hello Vincent! I hope you can help me out with a problem I just started to have with my 1998 Saturn SL-2. It is a 4 cylinder 2.2 liter twin cam, automatic transmission, P/S, A/C, cruise control, with 61,000 miles. Just recently I started to notice that it was hesitating or mildly kicking when I was going between 35 and 45 mph. Almost like I had water in my gas.

It is fine at higher speeds when I am on the highway. I tried putting dry gas in, then took it for a 60,000 mile tune up. Neither thing seemed to work. They did the tune up and informed me that they had changed everything that needed to be changed except for the fuel filter. The service guy informed me that this part did not need to be changed as per the Saturn parts guide.

My Check Engine Light has been on for a couple of days and I would like to know a little about what it could be before I bring it to the dealer or auto repair shop and they rake me over the coals because I am female and don't know the first thing about automobiles. I appreciate any advice you can give me on this matter.

Thank you so very much for your time!
Sincerely,
Michele

A. The Check Engine Light may hold the key to your problems! You will need to have someone retrieve the stored diagnostic trouble codes from the computer to see what area the problem is in. Then get back to me as to what codes were in ECM. We'll see if I can help you then. AutoZone will pull the codes for you for free.
