Replacing A Head Light Bulb

Q. Dear Vincent, How do I change the headlight bulb on a 1995 Lexus LS400? I expected to reach around the back of the assembly, but the battery is in the way! The owners manual tells me the bulb is an H4, but tells me to take it to a dealer to change the bulb! It looks like I can remove three screws and slide the assembly forward, but I wanted to ask first.

Also, on the same car, the idiot light for the taillights is on, but all the tail and brake lights are fine. Even the backup and license lights are fine. Do I need to see if one bulb is the wrong resistance?

Thanks for your help.
Regards, Steven

A. I take the battery out and the bulb is right there. It's a lot easier than taking out the whole lens assembly.

That bulb out warning is pretty accurate. If it says there is a bulb out, you can count on it. If the light is still on after replacing the headlight bulb (it checks the head light bulbs too), then you'll have to check all the bulbs.
