Shiftless Mazda 626

Q. Dear Sir, I have a 1991 Mazda 626 automatic transmission with 160,000 miles. I am having a problem shifting into gear. I have not driven the car for about four to five months. I can shift but it won't kick into gear. I can hear the engine trying but it just won't kick into gear.

Sincerely,
John

A. The first thing to do is check the transmission fluid level. If it is full, then you can try changing the transmission filter and fluid. It may have a sticking valve inside the valve body. Then look to see if the shift linkage is actually putting the transmission in gear. If it still won't shift, the transmission will have to be opened up.
