Dash Winks Out

Q. I own a 1989 Chevy S-10 Blazer 4x4. It is in very good condition with 80,000 miles on it and has never been off road. It has a 4.3litter V6 engine with 4spd automatic trans. There is a problem with the digital dash speed/turn signal light indicator. Only this part of the entire dash display goes very dim and sometimes does not appear at all. In frustration, a well placed whack on the plastic dash makes the speed display light up for a brief time.

Is there a wiring problem (ie.ground, cracked LED circuit, etc)?? I would like to be able to see how fast this vehicle is going without finding out from the Traffic Cops. Please advise

Thanks,
Morris

A. There is not too much you can do with this particular problem. The instrument cluster is a sealed unit and there is no provision for repairs. There is a plastic circuit board inside of it that goes bad and there is no way to repair it.

What you can try is this; remove the instrument cluster. Behind it is a large 34 pin connector. Make sure the contacts are clean and tight. If they are, replace the cluster. You can probably pick one up in a junk yard fairly cheap or get one at the dealer.
