Two Mazda Protege Questions

Q. Hi Vincent: Could you please comment/advise on two things:

1. Transmission Fluid Change: I suspect, the fluid has never been changed but I have no means of knowing since I am the second owner. Is it advisable to change it now?? I have heard it may lead to problems since the build-ups may get flushed out from their fixed positions and create damage.

Two Mazda Protege Questions

If not, is it alright to change it partly by siphoning out through the dipstick? Also, one of the shops after an oil change said transmission fluid is leaking into pan. How can that be fixed?

2. Wheel Alignment: I took my car to get the tires rotated and the shop showed me wear on the inside of all the four tires and advised wheel balancing. I am going to get the wheel alignment done, but can I still use the present tires or I have to replace them? After alignment, I think the car is not going to run on the worn surface of the tire, do I still need to change them?? Your help is much appreciated.

A. As for the transmission service, I would not recommend a transmission flush. But I would recommend a filter and fluid change. There is a chance that it may not work, but a very small chance indeed. Much less than a transmission flush. I don't recommend sucking it up through the dipstick tube unless you can get the filter out through the tube also.

As for the tires, well if they can do an accurate alignment with the tires that are on there, then you can continue driving on them to maximize the use. You will need to keep an eye on them because if they go below the wear bar, they will need to be replaced.
