Contour Brake Vibration
Q. Hi, I've got a problem and I'm hoping that you can shed some light on the subject for me. I've got a 1998 Ford Contour SVT and when I'm coming to a stop I get a vibration coming through the brake pedal and steering wheel. I DO NOT get this problem when I'm cruising at highway speeds and braking.
It only happens when I'm about 30-40 feet from where I want to stop and am press the brake pedal lightly. If I stomp on the brakes it does not happen either. I thought it might be the brakes so I replaced the entire front braking system, new rotors etc but I'm still getting the same problem.
Thanks you for your time.
A. There is a brake related recall on your car to replace a component that may fail and adversely affect braking performance. I would check with your local Ford dealer about this.
Ford has had some problems with the front brakes causing a vibration upon braking and has issued several TSBs on it. Since your car is a 1998 model, it should be under warranty and Ford will correct the problem at no charge to you.
