Ranger Four Wheel Drive Problem
Q. Hi Vincent, Thanks for putting up a great site!!! I recently obtained a 1991 Ford Ranger 4X4 extra Cab with the STX package and have been fixing all the minor problems with it. The truck runs and drives with no problems other then the power steering whine that seems to affect most Fords.
The worst problem that I have yet to look at is with the 4X4. It has the pushbutton console with automatic hubs. When you push 4X4 or Low 4X4, nothing happens. Someone said something along the line of an electric motor that does the shifting is bad. Where do I start with troubleshooting why I cannot engage 4X4? All fluids levels, (transfer, tranny, diffs) seem to be normal.

Thanks,
JohnA. I have run into this a few times and have found that the motor that engages the four wheel drive gets stuck or hung up. Removing the motor and reinstalling it usually takes care of it, so I would suggest trying this before anything else.
The motor is mounted on the back of the transfer case.
