Only Blows On High

Q. I have a 1998 Chevy Prizm, 1.6 4 cylinder with air conditioning, 71,000 miles. Recently my heater fan quit operating on the three lower speeds. It still works fine on the high speed. I have replaced the fan relay, no help. The relay closes when the fan switch is turned on, but the fan still runs in the high speed setting only.

There is no power to the fan in any of the three lower speeds. Any suggestions?

Lynn

A. The fan relay usually controls the high speed only. You probably have a burnt blower resistor unit. This resistor is what knocks down the voltage so you can have lower speeds. It should be mounted in the blower case near the motor. You may also have a bad fan switch but my money is on the resistor.
