Audi 100 Questions

Q. Vincent: I have a 1992 Audi 100, 2.8 liter V-6 FI, 87,000 miles. Automatic with A/C, P/W, ABS, Cruise. The standard 100, no Quattro. My problems are;

  1. If I try to start the car about 1-2 hours after warm up, it has to crank about 10 seconds before it will start. Cold starts are never a problem. New fuel filter, air cleaner, plugs and fuel system additives did not help. I use 92-93 octane name brand gas.
  2. I had a wheel alignment and new Goodyear tires installed. The car rides fine but the steering wheel is not straight, it's off center to the right about an inch or so. How can I correct this?
  3. I have a head gasket oil leak. From your experience, is this usually the center valley gasket or side gaskets? I can see the oil leak on the center back side of the engine when looking from the passenger side of the engine compartment.

Any help on these items would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Jim

A. Okay, here we go by the numbers:

1. The starting problem could be bad ignition wires (look at the connector ends carefully), distributor cap and rotor. Also misadjusted valves will cause a hard hot re-start as well. If all the basics check out, you may be experiencing a slight vapor lock condition. If that's the case then the fuel pump should be tested for pressure and delivery volume.

2. The off center steering wheel can only be, properly, corrected with a wheel alignment. Whoever did the alignment did not take the time to be sure the wheel was centered. A bit of sloppy workmanship here.

3. The oil leak could be from the head gasket and/or the valley pan gasket. Audi had problems with both. Audi came out with a modified head gasket PN# 078 103 383 E (for VIN Number 4APN100660 - 8GPA007244) and valley pan gasket PN# 078 103 771.

The use of a florescent dye and black light will help reveal the true origin of the oil leak.
