Chevy Silverado Gear Lube Stink
Q. Hi, I was recently in a car crash and was forced by the insurance to have my 1999 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 fixed. Needless to say, after months of headache, I have a problem that I cannot figure out. Following the accident, my drive line, pinion bearing, and ring and pinion gear were replaced, in addition to many other items.
Now I get this horrible smell of gear oil coming from the rear of the truck, when I roll down the front windows. I do have a shell and a boot that connects the cab to the rear of the truck and the smell does not occur if the boot is not in and the cab closed. I have looked all over for a leak, but have not been able to find it.
The smell seems to occur once the vehicle reached running temperature. Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Check the rear axle vent hose for being routed properly. Also make sure there are no leaks. The axle seals may be leaking and getting onto the rotors and burning off, causing the odor.
