Ford Explorer Front End Clicking Noise

Q. I have a 1993 Ford Explorer 4x4 V-6 and I have a persistent clicking noise coming from the front end at approximately 15 kph. I have replaced the hubs, bearings and brakes and the noise is still there in 2WD and 4WD. it does not change pitch when accelerated or turning so I took it to my local Ford dealer.

They diagnosed that it needed new hubs and recommended manual so after that was done the clicking noise was still there. Then they said that I needed a transfer case, that's when I said that is enough and $900.00 poorer I went to a driveline specialty shop.

They said nothing serious with transfer case they could not figure out the clicking noise. Now I am at wits end. I have also heard that it might be CV joints. Any ideas or input? Help!

A. Personally, the first thing I would have checked would be the universal joints. The front U-joints will "freeze" and not want to move.

Sometimes you can see rust stains around the caps of the U-joint and this will tell you there is a bad U-joint. If they are worn out and loose, you will be able to move them around.

Most likely you will need to remove them in order to insect and feel them. They should move perfectly smooth without binding.
