BMW Top And Doors

Q. Have a 2000 BMW convertible that runs fine but has a couple of body-related problems:

1) The driver's door sticks and sometimes won't open from the outside AT ALL. Then all of a sudden, I can open it from the outside. Frequently have to get in on the passenger side, lean across and REALLY tug at the handle to get it open. Any ideas?

2) On the convertible top, something came loose so that the fabric on the interior roof (right next to the back/side window) started flapping. Some string or rope-like stuff was not in the proper position. The last time I tried to put the top down, it got stuck, but after a few tries I was at least able to get it back up.

Thanks for ANY help or suggestions you may have!

A. I don't think I can help you too much with either question. As for the door, usually when they stick (and I'm assuming the door is unlatching) it's because the striker plate is out of adjustment or the body itself has twisted or been bent somehow. If it's not unlatching, there is an adjustment that can be made to the linkage that goes from the door handle to the latch mechanism. This will, in essence, make the rod longer and insure the door does unlatch.

As for the convertible top, my best advice is to take it to a convertible top shop. I have little experience with convertible tops.
