Windstar Electrical Problem

Q. Hello, I have a 1998 Windstar which is experiencing electrical problems. One day, for example, my wife and I took the family on a trip. We put the windows down and then made a stop on our way. When we continued on, the windows would not go up again. We pulled over and stopped and restarted the car and the windows worked again. Later that day, we were unable to close the rear passenger pop out window. A day or so later, it finally worked again.

Another day, one of the hottest days of the summer, the A/C would not work and the fan would not go on. The following day, however it mysteriously began working again.

Recently, we made a quick stop somewhere. My wife ran into a store while I waited with the car running. It was getting warm, so I tried the windows again. No luck. Nor did the A/C and the fan. Nor did the door lock work on the driver side (all the others work.) While holding down the window button in the down position and pushing down on the window at the same time, I was able to "unstick" the window. Now the windows work, but the A/C and fan and driver side door lock do not work still. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Andy

A. I think you have two separate problems here. The A/C and door locks do not have any common points in the electrical system and so do not relate to each other. I also referenced my TSBs to see if this was a known problem and there was nothing listed about this.

As for the A/C problem, if the fan and A/C compressor do not engage I would have to look at the power side of the system. Starting at the fusible links at the battery and working my way forward through the under hood fuse box into the passenger compartment fuse box. The A/C and blower motor get power from fuse 21 and 36 in the passenger compartment fuse box and the door locks get power from fuse 37 in the passenger compartment fuse box

The wiring diagrams indicate there was a change made in the electrical systems in vehicles built after 9/8/97, so I had to make some assumptions.

It is a 1998 model so, depending on the milage, you can take it back to Ford and they will locate and repair the problem under warranty.
