Jeep Cherokee Transmission Jolt
Q. I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee 2WD with an AW-4 4 speed automatic transmission on a 4.0 liter engine. My problem is the jolting in the transmission. When starting off everything is fine. But after it reaches fourth around 45 and above it starts jolting until it levels off at the speed I want.
It doesn't always do it though. Sometimes its very pronounced going uphill. I've changed the transmission fluid and filter and I'm told it could be the transmission modulator. Sometimes it feels it's getting worse, sometimes there's be a day when it doesn't do it at all. By the way, it usually starts jolting after the transmission gets warmed up. Could it just be something needing adjustment?

A. At about 45 mph the Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) kicks in. What you're feeling is probably TCC chatter. This could be due to a bad TCC inside the torque converter or a problem with the TCC solenoid inside the valve body.
