Flashing "S" Honda
Q. Hi I have a 1991 Honda Accord LX and just recently it's been having this problem where on the bottom right corner a green "S" light starts to blink when I try to attempt to start the car and when I attempt to start the car it doesn't start and this only happens on someday's. We changed the gauge already and that wasn't the problem.
I mean it seems to be better but I want to get rid of the problem for good. I was wondering you knew what the "S" light stood for and what the problem was. Thank you soooo much for your time. I'm desperate. It seems like I've tried everything possible.

Honda and Acura transaxle trouble codes are communicated by either flashing an LED on the transaxle computer, or by flashing the 'S' or 'D4' shifter status light on the instrument panel after connecting a service connector. The 'Check Connector' is tucked away under the far right edge of the dash board, either below the bottom right edge of the glove box, or behind the top edge of the passengers carpet, on top of the computer.
Make sure that the 'S' or 'D4' shifter status light on the instrument panel lights up for at least two seconds, or blinks after the key is turned on. Turn the key off. Jump the two 'Service Check Connector' pins together and turn the key on. Watch the 'S' or 'D4' light for flashes. if no problem exists, the light won't flash. if a problem exists, the light will give you either short, or long and short flashes. Short flashes are a 'ones' digit of either a one or a two digit trouble code. Long flashes are the 'tens' digit of a two digit code.
Short flashes are about a half second long, and long flashes last about a second and a half. There is about a one second 'OFF' pause between each code. All codes will be shown in sequence, lowest number first, up to the highest number. The sequence will repeat as long as the key is on and the connector is jumped together.
Once you have the codes you'll have a pretty good idea where to start looking for a problem.

- Lock-up solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
- Lock-up solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
- Throttle Position Sensor circuit open or shorted.
- Vehicle Speed Sensor open or shorted - No signal from speedometer.
- Shift Lever Position Switch circuit shorted.
- Shift Lever Position Switch circuit open.
- Shift Solenoid 'A' circuit open or shorted.
- Shift Solenoid 'B' circuit open or shorted.
- Counter shaft or transmission speed pulse generator open or shorted.
- Coolant Temperature Sensor open or shorted.
- Engine RPM (Ignition coil signal) open or shorted.
- (No code 12 used)
- Main shaft speed pulse generator open or shorted.
- Linear (line pressure control) solenoid open or shorted.
- Kick down switch circuit shorted.
