Explorer Runs Bad Cold

Q. My questions is; The check engine light is on to start. On cold starts, it is really, really rough. No other problems only when it is cold. Once it warms up after ten minutes or so on the road, no problems. Runs like a champ. I have been told that there is not a cold temperature sensor in Explorers yet every mechanic wants an extra $80.00 out of me for a diagnostic!

Have you come across anything like this before? Fuel filter replaced just 2,000 miles ago when the check engine light first came on.

1998 Ford Explorer
4.0 Liter V-6
Automatic transmission
55,000 miles
Fuel Injected
ABS brakes
P/S, A/C
Cruise control

Thanks,
Matthew

A. The symptoms you describe are most likely being caused by a bad Intake Air Temperature Sensor (ATS) or Engine Coolant Temperature Sensors (ECT). If DTC P1116 is stored in the computer, this would confirm it.
