Shifty Mazda
Q. Hi Vincent, In my 1994 Mazda 626, 99,000 miles, automatic transmission, I have sudden flash of the "hold mode" lamp on the dashboard, after that transmission starts vibrating and gears shift with a hard push to the car. When the sensor is reset, the battery is disconnected for several minutes, it runs normally several hundred miles and than everything repeats.
What it can be and should I rebuild this transmission or get rid of the car?
Thank you.
LeoA. There are several things that can cause the light to light and have the transmission go wacky. In the engine it could be a bad Throttle Position Sensor (TPS). It can also be a bad vehicle speed sensor or defective pulse generator. On the transmission it could be a defective 1-2 shift solenoid, 2-3 shift solenoid, 3-4 shift solenoid or a defective lock-up solenoid.
I would look at the TPS first. Nissans would do the same thing and the cause was always a bad TPS. The company that supplies Nissan with their TPS also supplies Mazda with theirs.
