Ford Galaxy Brakes

Q. I am writing about a 1967 Ford Galaxy Station Wagon. The engine is a 390 with auto transmission and is at 140,000 miles. It has a carburetor, power steering and A/C.

The car has front and rear drum brakes. The rear drums are always very hot, even after traveling short distances at slow speed. Also, the brake pedal is hard. I recently replaced everything in the braking system with new parts. If you have any explanations, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Thanks,
Donald

A. If the rear brakes are getting unusually hot, then something is causing the brakes to drag. The first thing I would check is the parking brake cables. Make sure they are not frozen and move freely. Also check the adjustment. When you install new rear brake shoes you're supposed to completely back off the parking brake adjustment and when the shoes are replaced and adjusted correctly, then you adjust the parking brake.

Another possibility is the master cylinder is bad and it's not releasing the fluid pressure for the rear brakes.
