Honda Accord Shift Interlock

Q. My sons Honda Accord, 1992, automatic transmission, 2.1 liter won't shift from park into any gear from stop. He is depressing the brake pedal when attempting to shift gear as required. He must stop engine, use key to unlock transmission override button, put transmission in neutral. Then he can start the car and shift from neutral into other gears.

If he puts car in park, he must repeat this procedure, i.e. stop engine, etc. This problem seemed to start after he removed a door panel to replace a speaker?

Any cause/effect here?? Is it possible it's a blown fuse?? Which one?? #25 (UHFB) or is it a bad switch?? Ever run across this before?

Thanks,
Steve

A. I don't think replacing the door speaker would have anything to do with the Shift Interlock system. The first thing to do would be to check fuse number 1 (10 amp) in the passenger compartment fuse box and fuse number 25 (20 amp) in the under hood fuse box.

If the fuses are good, then you need to check the brake switch. if the brake lights work then it's good, the Shift Interlock system uses this as an input signal.

From here it gets complicated since the system has its own control unit and gets inputs from the PCM and TPS. Hopefully it is just a blown fuse.
