Volkswagen Jetta Steering Wheel Stuck

Q. This is a long shot, but I figured I would give it a try. I just got back my 1996 Volkswagen Jetta, 2.0 liter with about 139,000 miles a few weeks ago after having some serious repairs, the ignition system had to be replaced. The car was running fine, minus the Check Engine Light coming on to have new plugs and wires. The other day I go to start my car and the key does not even turn.

If I push the key into the slot the radio will come on indicating that the battery is fine, as it should be because I replaced that too. When I go to turn the key, however, it acts as if it cannot go any further. It may be helpful to note that the wheel was moving rather freely, but them my mother locked it, later allowing me to get it started.

I called the dealership once again and the man said that the wheel locks often need pressure to release so he told me to get someone with a tow truck to hook the steering wheel up to the truck and pull! After not following that advice for the sheer fact that it sounds crazy, I was able to get the car started. The next day the same thing happened and I have been unable to get it started again.

It is important to note that now the wheel does not even move as if someone has glued it into place. Do you have any idea what may be causing these problems? I would appreciate any help you could send my way.

A. That's what I love about this business Heather, just when I thought I've heard it all, someone comes along with a new one. I can't believe he told you to get a tow truck to turn the steering wheel. I showed this to the guys in the shop and they all agreed you are a smart girl for ignoring that advice.

Another thing we all agree on is you should go to a different Volkswagen Dealership for service.

If the key will not turn in the Ignition Lock cylinder, then the problem is with the Ignition Lock Cylinder. If the key won't turn, the steering wheel will not unlock. The fact that the radio plays when you insert the key tells me you have the old style Ignition Key Lock/Cylinder assembly.

There is an updated Ignition Key Lock/Cylinder assembly that will correct your problem.
